Explanation to answers

1.Since between 5 and 7 the two hands of a clock point opposite directions at
6 o' clock only, they point in opposite directions 11 times in every 12 hours.
So, in a day, the hour hand and minute hand are diametrically opposite to each other (in the same straight line)
in 22 times.

2. The angle traced by hour hand
8 × 30 + 40×(1/2) = 260°
The angle traced by minute hand in 40 minutes = 40 × 6 = 240°
So, the angle between minute hand and hour hand at 8-40 is (260° - 240°) = 20°

3. In an accurate clock, 55 minutes spaces are covered in 60 minutes.
60 minutes spaces are covered in
(60/55)×60 = 65(5/11) minutes.
Loss in 65 minutes
= 5/11 minutes.
Loss in 143 hours
(5/11)×(1/65)×143×60 = 60 minutes.

4. The angle 270° between the two hands is also same as angle 90°.
In 12 hours, they are at right angles
22 times since between i) 2 and 4 ,
ii) 8 and 10 only 3times the hands are at right angles.
Hence in 24 hours they are at right angles at 44 times.

5. We can use the formula
(2/11)(H × 30 + A) or (2/11)(H × 30 - A)
Here A = 49° H = 9
So (2/11){9×30 + 49} or
