Hillary Clinton appointed first female chancellor of UK's Queen's University

Former US secretary of state Hillary Rodham Clinton has been appointed as the first female Chancellor of UK's Queen's University, it was announced on Thursday. Clinton, who received an honorary doctorate from Queen's in October 2018, will become the University's 11th Chancellor and will serve in the post for a period of five years with effect from January 1, 2020, the university said in a statement.
Queen's University, a public research university in Belfast, United Kingdom, was opened in 1849 and is one of the leading universities in the UK and Ireland with a distinguished heritage and history.

The 72-year-old said it was a great privilege to be appointed as the Chancellor of the prestigious Queen's University and has great fondness for it.
"It is a great privilege to become the Chancellor of Queen's University, a place I have great fondness for and have grown a strong relationship with over the years. The University is making waves internationally for its research and impact and I am proud to be an ambassador and help grow its reputation for excellence," she was quoted as saying in the statement.

Hillary, who was the Democratic presidential nominee, lost the 2016 US election to Republican candidate Donald Trump. The Chancellor fulfils three main roles - a ceremonial one which involves presiding at degree congregations, an ambassadorial role, where the office holder helps to open doors for the University as it seeks to fulfil its mission and finally as an advisor, available to the Vice-Chancellor and senior management as a sounding board and to provide counsel and guidance, the statement said.

அமெரிக்காவின் முன்னாள் செயலாளர் ஹிலாரி கிளின்டன் ஐக்கிய ராஜ்ஜியத்தில் உள்ள குயின்ஸ் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் வேந்தராக நியமிக்கப்பட்டார். குயின்ஸ் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் முதல் பெண் வேந்தர் இவரே. இந்த செய்தி கடந்த வியாழக்கிழமை அறிவிக்கப்பட்டது.

குயின்ஸ் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் படித்து 2018-ம் ஆண்டு அக்டோபர் மாதம் முனைவர் பட்டம் பெற்றவர் ஹிலாரி கிளின்டன். தற்போது அவர் அப்பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் 11-வது வேந்தராகப் பொறுப்பேற்றிருக்கிறார். 2020 ஜனவரி 1-ம் தேதி தொடங்கி அடுத்த ஐந்து ஆண்டுகள் வரை இந்தப் பதவியை அவர் வகிப்பார்.

ஐக்கிய ராஜ்ஜிய நாடான அயர்லாந்தின் பெல்பாஸ்ட் பகுதியில் உள்ளது குயின்ஸ் பல்கலைக்கழகம். 1849-ம் ஆண்டு இந்த அரசு ஆராய்ச்சி பல்கலைக்கழகம் நிறுவப்பட்டது. நீண்ட நெடிய வரலாறும் பாரியம்பரியமும் கொண்ட இக்கல்வி நிறுவனம் ஐக்கிய ராஜ்ஜியத்தின் தலைசிறந்த பல்கலைக் கழகங்களில் ஒன்றாகும்.

பெருமைக்குரிய குயின்ஸ் பல்கலைக் கழகத்தின் வேந்தராக நியமிக்கப்பட்டது தனக்குக் கிடைத்த மிக உயரிய கவுரவம் என்று 72 வயதான ஹிலாரி கிளின்டன் தெரிவித்துள்ளார். மேலும் இது குறித்துப் பேசுகையில், “எனக்கும் குயின்ஸ் பல்கலைக்கழகத்துக்கும் இடையில் நீண்டகால பாச பந்தம் உண்டு. என் மனதுக்கு நெருக்கமான இப்பல்கலைக்கழகத்துக்கு வேந்தரானது எனக்குக் கிடைத்த மிக உயரிய கவுரவமாகும். ஆராய்ச்சி துறையில் சர்வதேச அளவில் தடம் பதித்து வரும் இப்பல்கலைக்கழகத்துக்குத் தூதர் என்ற முறையில் பெருமிதம் கொள்கிறேன்.

இதன் பெருமை செழித்தோங்க மேலும் செயலாற்றுவேன்” இவ்வாறு ஹிலாரி கிளின்டன் தெரிவித்தார். அமெரிக்காவின் ஜனநாயகக் கட்சியின் அதிபர் வேட்பாளராக 2016-ம் ஆண்டு பொதுத் தேர்தலில் டொனால்ட் ட்ரம்ப்பை எதிர்த்துப் போட்டியிட்டு வெற்றி வாய்ப்பை நழுவவிட்டார் ஹிலாரிகிளின்டன்.

இந்நிலையில், பட்டமளிப்பு விழாக்களை முன்னின்று நடத்துவது, பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் இலக்கை அடையத்தூதராகச் செயலாற்றுவது, துணை வேந்தர் மற்றும் நிர்வாகத்துக்கு ஆலோசனை மற்றும் வழிகாட்டல் வழங்கும் ஆலோசகராகச் செயல்படுவது ஆகிய மூன்று பொறுப்புகளை வேந்தர் என்ற முறையில் இனி அவர் நிறைவேற்றுவார்.
