Indian sent over 202k students to US in 2018-19, second largest after China: Report

Nov 18 (PTI) India sent more than 202,000 students to the US in 2018-19, the second largest after China which for the tenth consecutive year remained the largest source of foreign students in America, according to a report released on Monday.

The '2019 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange' said the number of foreign students in the US set an all-time high in the 2018/19 academic year, the fourth consecutive year with more than one million international students.

The data from the US Department of Commerce stated that international students contributed USD 44.7 billion to the US economy in 2018, an increase of 5.5 per cent from the previous year.

Students from India and China account for more than 50 per cent of international students in America. As many as 51.6 per cent of international students in the US pursued STEM fields in 2018/19 and the number of international students in Math and Computer Science programs grew by 9.4 per cent, surpassing Business and Management studies.

Engineering remained the largest academic field for international students in 2018/19, with 21.1 per cent of all international students.
European countries remain the most popular destinations for US study abroad students with 54.9 per cent of study abroad students going to Europe in 2017/18. The United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, France, and Germany hosted the most US study abroad students, it said.

சென்ற கல்வியாண்டில் (2018-19) அமெரிக்காவுக்கு 2 லட்சத்து 20 ஆயிரம் மாணவர்களை இந்தியா அனுப்பியுள்ளது. சீனாவுக்கு அடுத்தபடியாக அதிக எண்ணிக்கையில் அ.மெரிக்காவுக்கு மாணவர்களை அனுப்பும் நாடாக இந்தியா உள்ளது. இப்படி கடந்த பத்தாண்டுகளாகத் தொடர்ந்து நடந்துவருகிறது என்று திங்களன்று வெளியான அறிக்கையில் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது.

‘சர்வதேச கல்வி பரிமாற்றம் குறித்த திறந்த கதவுகள் அறிக்கை 2019’ என்று பெயரிடப்பட்டிருக்கும் இந்த அறிக்கையில், கடந்த நான்காண்டுகளாக 10 லட்சத்துக்கும் அதிகமான சர்வதேச மாணவர்கள் அமெரிக்காவில் படித்து வருவதாகவும் 2018-19 கல்வியாண்டில் தான் உச்சபட்ச எண்ணிக்கையில் வெளிநாட்டு மாணவர்கள் அமெரிக்காவுக்கு வந்திருப்பதாகவும் பதிவு செய்யப்பட்டிருக்கிறது.

அமெரிக்காவின் வர்த்தகத் துறை வெளியிட்டிருக்கும் தகவலின்படி கடந்த ஆண்டில் மட்டும் 4.47 கோடி அமெரிக்க டாலர்களை அமெரிக்கா சர்வதேச மாணவர்களின் வருகையால் சம்பாதித்துள்ளது. இது 2017-ம் ஆண்டைவிடவும் 5.5 சதவீதம் கூடுதல் என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. அமெரிக்காவில் உள்ள சர்வதேச மாணவர்களில் 50 சதவீதத்துக்கும் அதிகமானவர்கள் இந்தியா மற்றும் சீன மாணவர்களே.

இவ்வாறு அமெரிக்காவில் படிக்கும் சர்வதேச மாணவர்களில் 51.6 சதவீதத்தினர் ஸ்டெம் துறைகள் எனப்படும் அறிவியல், தொழில்நுட்பம், பொறியியல், கணிதம் ஆகிய பாடப்பிரிகளைச் சென்ற ஆண்டு தேர்ந்தெடுத்துள்ளனர். அதிலும் கணிதம், கணினி அறிவியலை படிக்கும் மாணவர்களின் எண்ணிக்கை 9.4 சதவீதமாக அதிகரித்துள்ளது. இதன் மூலம் வணிகம் மற்றும் மேலாண்மை பாடங்களைப் படிப்பவர்களின் எண்ணிக்கையை முந்தியிருக்கிறார்கள்.

ஒட்டுமொத்தத்தில் 2018-19-ல் 21.1 சதவீத வெளிநாட்டு மாணவர்கள் பொறியியல் படிப்பைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்துள்ளனர். இதனால் அதிக எண்ணிக்கையிலான சர்வதேச மாணவர்கள் படிக்கும் பாடப்பிரிவாக பொறியியல் உள்ளது. அமெரிக்க மாணவர்களைப் பொருத்தவரை 54.9 சதவீதத்தினர் ஐரோப்பிய நாடுகளுக்கு 2017-18-ம் கல்வியாண்டில்
படிக்க சென்றிருக்கிறார்கள். ஐக்கிய ராஜ்ஜியம், இத்தாலி, ஸ்பெயின், பிரான்சு மற்றும் ஜெர்மனி ஆகிய ஐரோப்பிய நாடுகள்தாம் பெருவாரியான அமெரிக்க மாணவர்களின் கல்வித் தளமாக திகழ்கின்றன.
